I know it’s tempting to want to add flashy backgrounds, new fonts, animated gifs and visitor counters. Being selective will help you get the most from free blog tools.

It’s a good idea to learn as much as possible about blogging tools to help you make an informed decision about what you want to add to your blog. Use only those tools that you think will really be useful.

Since there are many ways to track visitors to your blog, a visitor counter is likely to add unnecessary clutter to your page. A flashy background can be more of a distraction than a benefit since blogs are mainly text-based.

Remember that even a blog tool that doesn’t cost you money may not be an asset in the long run. Be realistic about assessing what kinds of blog accessories will help you realize your vision and improve your website.
